caliproject.jpg (43097 bytes) "Teens Making a Difference" is a program of California PROJECT LEAN, and has a tool kit for teen aged based nutrition programs. The kit highlights nutrition and physical activity policies in the school and community that you can pursue with the help of a teacher or advisor. The booklet includes a collection of activities and success stories of California teens making nutrition and physical activity policy changes in their communities. Also included is a game called "Playing the Policy Game," which outlines activities which drive the policy change process. Each step of the process is described in detail. There is a downloadable guide to help support policy changes, and downloadable art to support nutrition programs.
The North Carolina Physical Activity and Nutrition programs has downloadable brochures, and links to a program called "Sybershop," an interactive CD-rom program designed to impact the nutrition and physical activity levels of teens. arizona.jpg (24977 bytes) The Arizona Nutrition Network developed a social marketing campaign to promote fruit and vegetable consumption, complete with brochures, recipe cards, placemats, posters, and newsletters, available in both English and Spanish.
The official 5 A Day website has an online store where a variety of materials can be ordered. Most of the materials are for purchase. Materials include brochures, posters, educational materials, and other items that may be useful to a media campaign. 5aday.jpg (37096 bytes)
foodplay.jpg (25186 bytes) FoodPlay Productions provides a way to purchase the award winning video "This is Your Life," a production that promotes healthy eating and a physically active lifestyle. There are also links to order other information and some free downloads as well.

Now that you have looked at materials from existing nutrition programs, you may know what will be effective within your own school’s environment. However, there are many ways to use media to promote a 5 A Day program. The following is a variety of media resources that may be effective at your school. Remember that these are just suggestions and templates. Robinson Secondary School's DECA Chapter's Creative Marketing Project: "Teens Lead the Way to Five a Day"

Listed below are some of the activities that students of Robinson Secondary's DECA Chapter used to implement their fruit and vegetable promotion program:

  • Distributed 3,000 fruit erasers to the students.
  • Posted approximately 200 posters around the school.
  • Broadcast comical and informative clips on eating more fruits and vegetables on Good Morning Robinson, an inhouse produced news program viewed by 5,000 students daily.
  • Promoted fruits and vegetables using balloons, a student wearing a banana costume and providing informations handouts to the students provided by Dole.
  • Distributed 3,000 Dole bananas to students in the cafeteria.
